What are the different typologies of sex worker digital imagery? Furthermore, where does Whoretography sit within historical and contemporary sex work photo books and the phenomenon of self-publishing and visual activism? This e-book is the exegesis that accompanied the Whoretography creative practice as research dissertation submitted as a requirement for the degree of MA Creative Media Arts, London South Bank University, May 2017. Whoretography is practice based research. The results of practice-based research are not always easily quantifiable. Articulating objectively can be difficult. Since the formal recognition of artistic practice related research in the 1990s, creative media arts students, such as myself have submitted artistic works along with an accompanying exegesis for examination. Methods, processes, and conclusions that emerge from the intrinsically subjective dimension of artistic production can be challenging. "The problem confronting many artistic researchers is related to the need for the artist to write about his or her work in the research report or exegesis" How then, might the artist as researcher avoid on one hand, what has been referred to as “auto-connoisseurship”, the undertaking of a thinly veiled labour of valorising what has been achieved in the creative work, or producing a research report that is mere description ?” It is there for factual to say that the exegesis needs to “mindful of holding theory in consideration of the visual message" (Sullivan, 2009) and it's important to discuss precedents of practice and researcher's artistic practice, the artefacts produced and their value as research. In the case of Whoretography, the artefacts produced are the collection of self-published photobooks, the magazine and website.
